The Indiana Pacers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 132-126 on Friday (Dec. 15) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia to open the 2023-2024 NBA regular season.

Indiana put the brakes on Philadelphia’s winning streak, which had been on an eight-game winning streak since an opening night loss to Milwaukee.

It was Indiana ace Tyrese Halliburton who led the way for the Hoosiers, who were led by last season’s MVP Joel Embiid and Tyreese Maxey, who poured in 50 points in their last 13 meetings. Halliburton completed a double-double with 33 points, including seven 3-pointers, and seven rebounds and 15 assists to lead the Hoosiers to victory.

While his 61.1% (11-of-18) shooting from the field and 7-of-12 from three-point range for a three-point percentage over 50% were impressive, it was his poise that stood out the most. Halliburton didn’t commit a single turnover on the night while sprinkling in 15 assists.

However, Sacramento acquired Domantas Sabonis in a trade to bolster its interior strength, and Halliburton found himself in an Indiana uniform.

Once he took over the primary ball-handler role with his new team, Halliburton’s potential exploded, and he quickly became a key part of the team, averaging 20.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists on 40.0% shooting from three-point range in the 2022-2023 season, earning an All-Star nod.

He’s on a good pace this season, too. Through the first 10 games of the season, Halliburton is averaging 24.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 12.5 assists on 52.8 percent shooting from the field and 43.6 percent from three-point range, making a tremendous offensive impact.

Thanks to Halliburton’s breakout season, Indiana is currently 7-4 on the season, good for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

If Halliburton can maintain this level of performance throughout the season, Indiana may have a chance to play on a bigger stage after finishing 11th in the East last season and missing the play-in tournament.
