Jan Siebert, who led the Mainz under-23 team, will take over the baton on a temporary basis to fill the void at the head coach.

Coach Svensson is the person who recruited Lee Jae-seong, who played in the second division of the Bundesliga, to Mainz in 2021.

Lee Jae-seong, who was contemplating his next move in the summer of 2021, revealed that he decided to go to Mainz after seeing the passion of coach Svensson, who strongly wanted him.

Under coach Svensson, Mainz has established itself as a mid-tier team in the league, ranking 8th in the 2021-2022 season and 9th in the 2022-2023 season.

However, this season, they performed badly with 3 draws and 6 losses in 9 regular league games, falling to 18th place, the lowest in the league. For the first time since being promoted to the first division in the 2009-2010 season, we have to worry about relegation.

They were eliminated early on not only from the league but also from the German Football Association (DFB) Pokal, a cup competition.

The previous day, they were defeated 0-3 in the away game against Hertha Berlin in the second round of the DFB Pokal.

Coach Svensson said through the club, “It is very difficult to say goodbye, but I thought now was the most appropriate time. Although I will not be included in the club’s new plans, Mainz must work together to overcome the crisis.” He said.
