A mutually agreeable option is an option that must be agreed upon by both the player and the club in order to be exercised.

The Blue Jays said that in Merrifield’s case, both sides declined to exercise the option.

Merrifield previously agreed to a five-year, $27 million contract with his former team, the Kansas City Royals, that included an $18 million option for the 2024 season.

He was traded to Toronto at the trade deadline in August 2022.

Toronto acquired him in exchange for two players, Max Castillo and Samard Taylor.

In two seasons with Toronto, he batted .284 with a .330 on-base percentage, .420 slugging percentage, 16 home runs and 83 RBIs in 189 games.

This season, his first and second halves were polar opposites.

In the first half of the season, he batted .286 with a .342 on-base percentage and .392 slugging percentage in 82 games and was named an All-Star.

In the second half, however, he batted just .256 with a .286 on-base percentage and .370 slugging percentage in 63 games.

He didn’t get much of an opportunity after September, starting just 18 games.
