“When Darvish asked me to work out with him, I thought he was kidding…” Ahn Woo-jin stole my heart, Tommy John surgery ‘vivid review’
“I thought it was a prank at first.”
Ahn Woo-jin (24, Kiwoom Heroes) underwent Tommy John surgery on September 21 by Dr. Neil Elatrache at the Kellan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles, USA. He is the same surgeon who performed Ryu Hyun-jin’s (36, FA) Tommy John surgery and shoulder arthroscopy. Dr. Ellatrache even operated on Shohei Ohtani’s (29, FA) elbow the day before Ahn’s Tommy John surgery.
On April 16, a “vivid review” of Ahn Woo-jin’s Tommy John surgery was posted on the official Kiwoom YouTube channel. Ahn Woo-jin traveled to LA for about a month and recently returned home. She underwent surgery and basic rehabilitation in LA, and met Kim Ha-Sung (28, San Diego Padres) and was introduced to Darvish Yu and Blake Snell (FA) and had a conversation with them.토토사이트
“Darvish said, ‘I’ll pay for your plane ticket, and you can work out with me,'” says Ahn. At first I thought he was joking, but then he said he was serious. He said he was interested in Asian athletes and wanted to help. It was cool, and I hope we can work out together.”
When a representative from Kiwoom YouTube asked him what he would do if he had the chance to work out with Ohtani and Darvish, he didn’t hesitate for a second before choosing Darvish. “He has more experience as a pitcher,” he said.
Dr. Elatrache was meticulous. He removed a ligament from her left wrist and grafted it to her right elbow. As it turned out, Dr. Elatrache recommended removing the ligaments in his right wrist. Woojin removed the ligament in his left wrist because he was concerned that it would weaken his right arm. He was told that the ligament in his elbow was “stubbornly strong”. This means that the ligament was naturally strong.
Still, Dr. Elatrache assured him that “it won’t hurt again.” It was a reassuring statement. He even went to a rehabilitation center far away from the hospital, on a Saturday, which impressed her. “He’s the best doctor. I was surprised that he came to the rehabilitation center and checked my condition, and I was grateful that he came to the rehabilitation center to check on me when he could have spent time with his family on his day off.”
Tommy John surgery wasn’t the only thing he underwent. Ahn Woo-jin said, “I had my elbow bone shaved because I was told to smile,” and he said, “I will do my best to rehabilitate.” When asked by a YouTube representative if there are cases of fastball pitchers getting faster velocity after Tommy John surgery and rehabilitation, he replied, “I don’t know.”
On the other hand, Ahn felt the signs before he had his elbow examined. “It hurt a little bit against SSG (Aug. 31, 6 innings, 5 hits, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, 1 run). Before that, it was a little bad from Samsung Electronics (Aug. 25, 6 innings, 7 hits, 1 strikeout, 2 walks, 2 runs – winner). I had a blister, but my arm was also a little bad, so I went down early,” he said.
The SSG game was definitely different. “In the first inning or two, I didn’t have any velocity and you could see me throwing to the corners. But the results were good, so I thought, “This is how I should play baseball.” I threw hard in the crunch, and the fastball came out. The results were good.”
Ahn is now in the early stages of rehabilitation. Normally, the rehabilitation period for Tommy John surgery is about one year to one year and six months, which means that she will not be able to play in the 2024 season and will be able to return in time for the 2025 season. However, there is a possibility that he could undergo another physical during this hiatus to fulfill his military obligations. That would mean he could miss the 2025 season. In that case, he’ll be able to protect his arm in the long run. As for the timing of Darvish”s return, it”s hard to say at this point.
