However, when his command of his low-90s sinker, cutter, slider, super-slow curveball, and changeup falters, it’s not good. He doesn’t overpower hitters with his velocity. He’s also not a borderline pitcher, so there’s a certain amount of risk.

In this case, after a solid eight-run fifth inning, he faltered in the sixth. He threw a cutter up the middle to J.P. Crawford and got an infield single. With runners on first and second, he fired a changeup to Carl Rowley for a triple to right-center field. Pitcher Chris Stretton walked the tying run to load the bases.

In the end, aside from the three-run shot, it was a good outing. The offense helped him pick up his 11th win of the season. In September, he went 2-2 with a 6.65 ERA in four games, but it was a harvest season for him as he earned his first double-digit win total. Few expected the pitcher who replaced Jacob deGrom in the starting rotation to win 11 games with a 3.88 ERA in 33 starts.

Texas is in first place in the American League West after a four-game road sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays. At 85-68, they are a half-game ahead of the second-place Houston Astros. They remain tied with Toronto for second place in the wild-card race.

At this rate, Dunning could make his first postseason appearance in three years after 2020. Texas has some solid cards in Max Scherzer and Nathan Iovaldi. Andrew Heaney, Martin Perez. Jon Gray, and others. They’re unlikely to start in the postseason, but they’ll likely take the mound out of the bullpen.
