‘Super Rookie’ up to 153km… Kim Seohyun, ‘Jegoo Nanjo’ leaves big task ahead
Kim Seo-hyun, the highly anticipated ‘super rookie’, had a disappointing debut.
Kim started the 2023 KBO game against the NC Dinos at Changwon NC Park on July 17 and gave up three runs on three hits and four walks in two innings with one strikeout.안전놀이터
Kim’s first step into the starting lineup was a heavy one, as he was drafted by the Hanwha Eagles with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft and throws a fastball that tops out at 160 mph, drawing the attention of many baseball fans. Until the beginning of the season, Kim’s position was in the bullpen. Before his start against the NC, he had a 1-0 record with a 6.64 ERA in 19 games and 20.1 innings pitched.
Since then, he’s gotten some serious starting lessons in the Futures League, and Hanwha head coach Choi Won-ho has identified him as a possible fifth starter.

In his first opportunity, starter Kim Seo-hyun struggled with his pitches. In the first inning, Kim got off to a good start by striking out Son Asub and Park Min-woo on consecutive infield grounders. However, he gave up back-to-back singles to Park Gun-woo and Jason Martin.
In the second inning, Kim gave up back-to-back singles to Oh Young-soo and Do Tae-hoon before giving up a sacrifice bunt by Ahn Jung-yeol and a walk to Kim Joo-won to load the bases. He then got Park Min-woo to ground out to first base, but was unable to stop the runners from coming home. He then walked Park Gun-woo again, showing a shaky delivery. In response, the Hanwha bench switched to Han Seung-ju on defense in the bottom of the third.
Kim totaled 44 pitches on the day. He threw a mix of two-seam fastballs (20), four-seam fastballs (14), curveballs (8), and sliders (2). His fastball topped out at 153 mph.
In the end, I was disappointed that he gave up so many strikeouts against the fastball. Stable pitches seem to be essential for a super rookie’s ‘starting success’.
On the other hand, the game between Hanwha and NC ended with a late win for NC. Hanwha’s bats exploded with Nick Williams going 3-for-3, Noh Si-hwan having a multi-hit game and Chae Eun-sung having a two-hit performance, including a home run blast, but the team was unfortunate to give up a double to NC’s Yoon Hyung-joon in the 10th inning and a game-tying hit to Kim Soo-yoon.““““““““““““““
